The Management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), has reaffirmed its ban on unruly and rowdy celebrations following examinations, warning students against activities that could disrupt the peace, damage University property or compromise the safety of the campus community.

The directive was contained in a memorandum dated September 7, 2026, signed by the University Registrar, Chiedozie Uba, following Management's 7th meeting held the same day.

FUTO Management circular reaffirming the ban on unruly and rowdy celebrations after examinations

According to the memorandum, the University had previously prohibited forms of senseless post-examination celebrations following concerns over the destruction of University property, particularly during celebrations involving graduating students.

Activities Strictly Prohibited

Management specifically listed several activities that students are prohibited from engaging in after examinations, including:

  • Motorcades accompanied by loud music, excessive horn-blowing, reckless driving and other forms of noise or public disturbance.
  • The use or display of armed guards or security personnel during celebrations.
  • Rowdy behaviour, public revelry, disorderly conduct or any activity capable of disturbing the peace of the University and its host communities.
  • Littering, indiscriminate disposal of waste and activities that degrade or pollute the University environment.
  • Blocking or obstructing roads, entrances, walkways or other University facilities.
  • Damage, defacement or destruction of University property.
  • Any other conduct that violates University regulations or threatens the safety and security of the University community.

Students Warned to Comply

Management stated that students found participating in any of the prohibited activities will face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the regulations governing student conduct.

The University also urged students to remain security-conscious and promptly report any suspicious activity or movement around them.

All students have therefore been strongly advised to comply with the directive and refrain from any act capable of bringing the University into disrepute.

Deans and Heads of Departments have also been requested to communicate the directive to students within their respective Schools and Departments.

As examinations continue, FUTO students are reminded that celebrating the completion of exams should not come at the expense of safety, orderliness or University property.
