A Reflection on Scholarship and Leadership

The 7th Valedictory Lecture centred on themes that remain important to the development of a technology-focused university, including academic excellence, leadership, service and institutional continuity.

By drawing on the FUTO journey through the perspective of a physicist and former university leader, the lecture’s theme connected personal and professional experience with broader questions about scholarship, university administration and the responsibilities of higher education institutions.

The focus on emerging opportunities also highlighted the importance of looking beyond past achievements towards the possibilities available to universities in research, innovation, knowledge development and service to society.

Professor Francis Chukwuemeka Eze

Professor Eze is a Professor of Physics and served as the Seventh Substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri.

His delivery of the lecture brought together his academic background and experience in university leadership under a theme that examined the relationship between scholarship, institutional legacy and future opportunities.

The lecture was hosted under the auspices of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ikechukwu N. S. Dozie, who extended the invitation to the university community and the general public.

The Significance of FUTO’s Valedictory Lecture

Valedictory lectures provide universities with an opportunity to examine institutional experiences, recognise contributions to academic life and preserve lessons that can guide future generations.

For a university focused on science, engineering and technology, reflections on scholarship and leadership are particularly relevant to sustaining research, strengthening academic standards and creating opportunities for students and researchers.

The themes of the 7th Valedictory Lecture also speak to the wider responsibility of universities to prepare students for changing professional environments while contributing knowledge and innovation to national development.

Looking Ahead

The lecture placed FUTO’s institutional journey within a broader conversation about leadership, academic service and the opportunities available to universities in a changing educational and technological environment.

As the university continues its academic work, the themes of scholarship, legacy and emerging opportunities remain relevant to students, researchers, academic staff and university administrators.

The 7th Valedictory Lecture added another occasion for the FUTO community to reflect on the institution’s history and consider the principles that can support its continued development.

FUTO Central will continue to report on major university events, academic developments and initiatives affecting the FUTO community.
