Reports circulating among student beneficiaries claim that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) September upkeep allowance will begin disbursement by, Monday, September 28, 2026.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation from NELFUND itself specifically stating that the September upkeep payment has commenced. Students are therefore advised to treat the information as a claim for now, pending verification through NELFUND's official channels.
A Recurring Pattern of Delays
This is not the first time student beneficiaries have had to wait for confirmation on the exact commencement of a month's upkeep payment. Upkeep allowances under the scheme have, on several occasions in 2026, seen delays tied to technical issues, platform upgrades, and reconciliation exercises on NELFUND's payment systems.
In July, for instance, the disbursement of the June and July upkeep allowances was similarly delayed for weeks before commencing, following a scheduled upgrade of NELFUND's payment platform. NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, confirmed at the time that the delay was due to technical work aimed at fixing payment issues and improving the disbursement process, and that all outstanding backlogs would be cleared once payments resumed.
NELFUND has also previously had to address a case involving 11,685 students who did not receive their allowances for the 2024/2025 session due to issues such as network downtime, failed transactions, and unvalidated bank account details, leading to a dedicated reconciliation and repayment exercise.
What Beneficiaries Should Do
Given the unconfirmed nature of the current claim, students are advised to:
- Monitor their bank accounts for any credit alerts referencing NELFUND upkeep payments.
- Avoid panicking if payment has not yet reflected, as disbursements are typically released in batches rather than to all beneficiaries simultaneously.
- Verify information through NELFUND's official social media handles and website, rather than relying solely on unverified claims or screenshots shared online.
- Be cautious of fake notices claiming to be from NELFUND. The Fund has, in the past, publicly disowned circulating documents falsely attributed to it, urging students to disregard unofficial statements.
What to Watch For
Should the September upkeep disbursement indeed commence, beneficiaries can expect the standard ₦20,000 monthly stipend to be credited directly into their personal bank accounts, in line with the structure of previous disbursement cycles.
Students are advised to stay alert, check their accounts, and rely only on verified NELFUND communication before drawing conclusions about the status of this month's upkeep payment.
